Two years have passed since Sí al futur announced its intention to run for the next elections to the presidency of FC Barcelona

Víctor Font: "Seeing the situation in which the world and the Club are in, it is no time to improvise candidacies"

Tomorrow will mark two years since Sí al futur, the project led by Víctor Font and which seeks to offer a new proposal to the members of FC Barcelona, made public the commitment to run for the next elections to the presidency of the Club. With the Entity’s elections barely a year away now - they are scheduled for the summer of next year - Sí al futur continues to disseminate and finalize its project to face the most complex situation in recent decades – to replace the best generation of footballers in history, build and finance Espai Barça and compete against public limited companies with almost unlimited financial resources, preserving the ownership of the Club in the hands of the members and its competitive capacity, both in football and in all its sections. And if this storm was not perfect enough, Barça has also received the lash of COVID19, which has paralyzed sports competitions around the world, has brought to a standstill the Club's sports activity in all categories and sections and has cast an even more obscure shadow on the Entity's financial ability.

To address this context, Sí al futur proposes in broad strokes:

  • Grouping the talent of the best generation of footballers in history and ensuring that they are the ones to lead decision-making in the sports area.
  • Reinventing the income generation model to be able to compete and at the same time keep the ownership of the Club in the hands of the members.
  • Redefining the Club's governance and decision-making model.
  • Taking advantage of Barça's influence to help face the main challenges of 21st century society.

Since officially announcing that it would stand in the next elections, Sí al futur has worked in different fields:

Presentations of the project across the territory: Sí al futur has toured the country to make itself known among Barça supporters. In addition to the first presentation at the AXA Auditorium in Barcelona before 600 people on January 31, 2019, Granollers, Sant Cugat, Mataró, Vic and the Catalan capital on a second occasion have been stages where Víctor Font personally explained the project to almost two thousands culés. Sí al futur has also visited Barcelona supporter clubs, such as Penya Anguera (Barcelona) and Igualada. The COVID19 crisis has forced two presentations to be postponed: one in Felanitx (Mallorca) and the other in Terres de Lleida.

Online project presentations: Following the COVID19 crisis, Sí al futur's presentations have gone digital. Three of them have been held so far with more than 500 Barcelona fans, who have been able to chat with Víctor Font and put to him doubts, questions and suggestions.

Meetings with members: Small groups of members have met with Víctor Font throughout these two years to discuss the Sí al futur project in depth and discuss Barça. There have been a dozen meetings attended by about 200 more members.

Open letter to members: After the last resignations of FC Barcelona executives, Sí al futur issued an open letter to the Barcelona social mass on April 12 of this year, in which, among other things, it warned: "We have experienced the sentencing of the Club in the Neymar case, the disagreements made public between employees and players with executives and managers, and the audit of the case on social networks, which it seems will confirm the scandal. Let's add an erratic sports policy, the breaking up of the Board of Directors and the significant reduction in income due to the pandemic, and the result is the danger of economic bankruptcy and moral decay in which the Club has settled."

Promoting electronic voting in the Club: Sí al futur promoted a statutory reform for FC Barcelona to adopt electronic voting. The proposal won the vote in the Delegates’ Assembly but it fell short of only 58 votes to obtain the 2/3 necessary for it to have to be applied. To bring the initiative to a vote in the Assembly, Sí al futur collected 4,699 valid signatures from members, a figure that far exceeded the 3,253 signatures necessary to debate the initiative (3% of the members with passive voting rights). For the first time in the recent history of the Club, an item was introduced on the agenda of the Delegates’ Assembly at the proposal of a member.

Referendum to decide the financing of the Espai Barça: In December of last year, Sí al futur demanded to the Board of Directors of FC Barcelona that the modification of the financing of the Espai Barça is voted in a referendum instead of being limited to an Extraordinary Delegates’ Assembly. In this sense, Víctor Font also demanded from President Bartomeu and the Board members transparency about the Entity's economic situation. Three months after Font had made public his position on this issue, President Bartomeu announced that a new referendum on Espai Barça would be held.

Presentation of the book: On June 12, 2019, the book Víctor Font, construïm junts el Barça del futur, (Let’s build Barça’s future together) written by journalist Antoni Bassas, was presented. The presentation was held at the Casa del Llibre, in Barcelona, and was attended by the author, Víctor Font, and the journalist Pere Escobar.

Víctor Font's statement:

"Two years ago, we announced that Barça's members would find Sí al futur's ballot on the day of the elections for the Club's presidency next year.

When we came out, some people said to us: 'It’s a long way to go to elections yet! Where are you going so early?' Well, the last thing we expected now was for coronavirus to add to the huge challenges that Barça already had. The facts have shown that we were right: seeing the situation the world and the Club are in, it is no time to improvise candidacies.

Now, with one year to go before the elections, I can say that we have made that commitment grow by adding the work and talent of more Barcelona fans every day, and that we are still open to your contributions.

Our eyes shine just thinking about everything that, together, we can do for Barça. Do you recall those clean eyes of excitement that children have when they walk into the Camp Nou for the first time in their lives? Well, we are just the same."
